The themes were, firstly, to create a soft curve like a dragon with short materials, and secondly, to recreate the shape of the bridge in Da Vinci’s Codex Atlanticus. This is a three-dimensional pergola made not from a same-shaped continuous curve, but deliberately presented by an artist as if they were joined wood pieces. To realise the complex shape with a handcrafted feel, the examination of the detail was an important element. Not only were the parts to be joined, they had to be joined naturally.
POINT
The component parts are almost all of differing shapes. Usually, drawings are made for individual parts from 3D digital data, and the items will be made accoridng to these drawings, but for this project, we decided to manage every part digitally to increase quality and decrease costs. The manufacturing process was analysed, and the setting work involving human intervention was kept to a minimum, with the NC process as the main axis. The required processing and management data were plotted on Excel from 3D data, and input into the NC machine automatically, enabling digital processing to a high degree of precision.
