(From the book)
As Dr. Shoya Uchida points out in his book, “Architecture in Detail” (Shokoku-sha, 2018), in his article “60 Years from Pot Windows to Intercolumnar Devices,” “It can be said that European architecture is dominated by the design of the exterior, in other words, the design of the form. It seems that only in recent years has the issue of understanding the overall architectural form, or appearance, come to be considered. To put it bluntly, a new concept of architectural surface design and technology has emerged. In this special issue, Asahi Building Wall (hereafter, AGB), which has been supporting the dawn of surface design and technology, which are not well known in Japan, presents examples of recent works that AGB has been working on together with architects, not only in terms of their expressions but also in terms of DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly), a term used in the construction industry, and deciphering them. I would like to decipher them from the viewpoint of DfMA (Design for Manufacturing and Assembly), a construction industry term, as well as their expressions.

Before World War II, the company published books on national treasures and other cultural property buildings. After the war, the company expanded its projects into the field of modern architecture in line with the needs of the times, publishing three magazines (“Kenchiku Bunka”, “Detail”, and “Kenchiku no Gijutsu Jikken”), a series of books such as “Kenchiku Gaku Taikei”, “Sekai no Gendai Kenchiku”, and “Doboku Kogaku Taikei”, and many important monographs such as the “Kenchiku Daijiten” and other encyclopedias. The company has published more than 3,000 publications in a wide variety of fields, has nurtured many architects and researchers, and has made a significant contribution to the advancement and development of the field of architecture in Japan and abroad.
AGB’s management philosophy is “to contribute to the urban landscape and environment by creating beautiful facades that will be handed down to future generations,” and we provide facade engineering services that study the realization of architectural exteriors envisioned by designers as a complete set. Starting with this publication, we will continue to be involved in architectural exteriors in Japan and abroad, and will strive to contribute to the creation of beautiful cityscapes.
